Full architectural design and delivery
The design of the £1.2m home has been generated by, and forms a continuation of, the natural flow of the immediate site landscape, allowing generous garden areas surrounding the building in order to create a sense of place in its ‘woodland’ setting. The design concept has been developed in response to the specific characteristics of the site and surrounding environment.
The clients brief was to deliver a home that reflected the philosophy of their own award-winning, cutting-edge company. It had to reflect not just the character but to reveal the internal engineering mechanics where possible in a new building located in the very conservative setting of Woodhall Spa. Traditional vernacular architecture was therefore considered to be inappropriate and was not part of the design brief; this challenged LK2 to create a new house which embraced cutting-edge contemporary architecture. Features include: sensor activated lighting using data capture technology to improve use, hybrid construction of SIPs, building orientated to maximise solar gain in winter and shading in summer, a specialist ready-made trenchless foundation system.
Biophilic design, which focuses on the health benefits of creating a connection with nature through the built environment, has influenced the project throughout, including reflection ponds and glazing to compliment the tranquil setting of the development. This is also supplemented by features such as extensive colour changing and programmable LEDS throughout the scheme to promote positive wellbeing dependant on the users need.
The brief required LK2 to design to Passivhaus principles with dynamic design aligned to high levels of energy efficiency and sustainability. The extensive areas of glass proved a real challenge - approximately fifty percent of the external walls are superior double or triple-glazed structural windows to give a ‘transparent’ aesthetic and the large areas of uninterrupted glazing on all sides overlook the woodland and landscaped garden, creating a very strong inside/outside connection.
