Studio One (S1) is an innovative office on the outskirts of Lincoln, with offerings such as hot desks, meeting space hire and full office lease. The aim was to provide a state-of-the-art building which embraced technology and provided flexibility to tenants.
The building used extensive upcycled materials as part of the finishes, including bricks and tiles rescued from other developments (destined for the skip), and timber offcuts from rafter feet were split and used as feature cladding throughout the building. Most elements of the structure are exposed and detailed to complement the brief, with finishes only applied where needed, reducing built carbon footprint.
The building optimises floor to floor heights, which reduces the building volume, but with no floating floors and little plastered finishes to conceal services, the team were tasked with designing a solution to provide power and IT to desks. The solution was purpose made power poles which could be moved easily and provided total flexibility in supplying power and IT to desks, no matter what the layout or number of desks. The materials used for the power poles were upcycled stud wall jumbo studs and timber off cut panel sections.
They can be used for up to 20 tables and all infrastructure (IT and power) is placed within the overhead troughs of the galvanized formwork that support the concrete slab. The poles provide RCD surge protection at or within pole, rather than being at the fuse board. This resulted in less cabling (no ring circuits) and reduced earth leakage, which in turn reduced the overall power requirement into the building, thus reducing demand on the district supply
