The site comprises of student accommodation split over a mixture of three, four and five storeys into five separate blocks; a teaching facility with the main entrance leading into a three storey atrium with communal cafe and reception area and a lecture theatre to the rear.
The proposed development has been positioned to respect the residential scale of the local area, gradually stepping up towards the North-West corner of the site to minimise the development’s potential impact on its surroundings. The natural perspective created from the street frontage on the road, back to the rear of the site reduces the perceived scale further.
The variety of roof heights explored in the architecture creates individuality between each building, forming a roof canopy that enhances the development’s relationship to its context. The carefully chosen materials palette aims to reference the local area, which is predominantly red brick.
Each building has been strategically positioned to create permeability throughout, while also helping to control views in and out of the site. In turn, the student accommodation interacts with the teaching facility, framing views of the façades and creating a partnership for both living and learning on-site.
The position of the teaching facility, slightly rotated from the road, forms an axis back to the main campus to reinforce the connection between the neighbouring campus site.
The three storey element of the teaching facility frames the entrance to the site alongside the street-facing student accommodation block. This largely glazed and screened area of the building creates an active frontage to the road, whereby the teaching spaces are visible to the public.
