Inspiring the Next Generation of Designers
Over the past few weeks, we've been delighted to welcome several work experience students into the LK2 office, giving them a first-hand insight into what life in architectural practice is really like.
Rather than simply observing, the students were given a design task of their own: to design a tiny house in a location of their choice. This could be anywhere from a dream destination to somewhere they already know and love.
The challenge was to design a home to a set size and scale, while considering its surroundings, local environment, architecture and community. They were encouraged to think about what makes a building appropriate for its location, as well as how their own ideas could respond to the character of the place.
From there, the students developed their designs into a short presentation, explaining their ideas and the rationale behind their decisions. They could choose to design with pen and paper or explore some of the digital software we use within the practice. Most opted for SketchUp, which provided a more intuitive way to develop their ideas from an initial concept through to a fully rendered design.
It was a great opportunity to experience some of the different stages involved in architectural design – from those first sketches and ideas, through to communicating and presenting a finished proposal.
We're passionate about supporting young people as they explore future careers. Work experience is about far more than observing – it's an opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence in a professional environment, and understand how creativity, collaboration and problem-solving come together on real projects.
‘The experience provided through placement at LK2 has proved invaluable for our student. It has offered a valuable insight into a range of career opportunities, helped to develop communication and teamwork skills, and given them the confidence to step outside the classroom and apply their learning in meaningful, practical situations.
The support shown and the consideration given to our student's welfare has been commendable. LK2 have created an environment in which our student felt comfortable asking questions, adapting their approach when needed, and making the most of every opportunity. This has ensured that the placement has been beneficial for everyone involved.
It has been wonderful to see our student grow in confidence throughout the placement. We hope this experience will stay with them as they continue their education and begin to consider future career aspirations.
A huge thank you to LK2 and everyone who has supported our student during their placement. We greatly appreciate the time, guidance, and encouragement your team has provided. Opportunities such as this make a real difference to our students and play an important role in helping them prepare for their future.’ Priory Academies

Many have gone on to build successful careers within the profession, and we're proud to have played a part in their journey.
Investing in the next generation benefits everyone. Fresh perspectives, curiosity and enthusiasm are invaluable, and we're always pleased to share our knowledge with those considering a career in architecture, design or the wider construction industry.
We'd like to thank all of the students who joined us recently for their energy and enthusiasm, and we look forward to welcoming more aspiring designers into the practice in the future.
